1st team finish top of Prem 1 to secure promotion to the English league.

Following the premature end to the hockey season, Hockey Wales took the decision that final league positions would be based on % points. This meant that Gwent finished in 1st place in the South Wales Prem 1 division with 81 points; just one % point ahead of Cardiff & Met.

After losing the first two games of the season, Gwent went on an incredible 12 game unbeaten run; winning 11 games and drawing 1. The team got better and better as the season went on and Coach Ian Blackburn compared the style of play to the fantastic Liverpool football team of the 1980’s!

Although the team would have wanted to play out the rest of what had been a very exciting season, they are obviously delighted to finish top of the league and gain promotion into the West Premier 1 Division. Captain Beth Poultney said ‘we wish the circumstances had been different but the team is looking forward to a new challenge; testing themselves against some very good English opposition and Welsh rivals Penarth & Howardian’.

The 2020-21 season will be only the second season that Welsh teams have been able to compete at this level of English hockey and it provides another opportunity for Wales to show how good their club teams are! Playing at this level will no doubt improve the skills & fitness of the team and take the 1st team and the rest of the club to another level.

Club Captain, Sarah Law said; ‘the 1st team relies on the support of the rest of the club and we would like to thank all players, coaches, committee members, umpires, supporters and Torfaen Leisure Trust for another fantastic season. The Orange Army is the best!’.

Gwent’s 2nd, 3rd & 4th teams all maintained their league positions in Premier 2, Division 2 and Division 4 respectively.

Everyone at Gwent will be looking forward to celebrating this great season whenever this may be possible!
