Gwent M1's 1 - 2 Cardiff University 2

Today's M1's game was always going to be challenging. Cardiff Uni 2s sat top of the division having only lost 1 game all season. In contrast, Gwent were sitting mid-table, and weakened by missing key players on National Age Group duty. To add insult to injury, Cardiff Uni turned up with a squad of 16 to face the 12-man Gwent squad.

Gwent's game plan quickly became evident. The half-court press limited Cardiff Uni to less attacks than they would have liked. The front three patrolled the half-way line tirelessly, and when the ball did break through, the midfield filled the gaps and quickly broke down the play. The few chances Cardiff Uni did manage to create were comfortably snuffed out by the Gwent defense. Indeed, Gwent looked in control, comfortable and composed on the ball, and more than a match for their opposition on the quick break. A great drag-flick by Tim Jones gave Gwent a 1-0 half-time lead, although a couple of missed chances would be rued come the final whistle.

The second half started quickly, with Cardiff Uni trying to press their numerical advantage and tire the home team. Captain Rhys Tucker led by example, never giving up and battling to the end. Cardiff Uni started to get frustrated with their inability to break the Gwent defense down, and a little bit of niggle started to creep into the game. This culminated in three green cards, 2 for the visitors and 1 for Gwent's centre back, Phil Midgley.

Gwent made it to 60 minutes without conceding, but Cardiff Uni's line changes - more reminiscent of a game of ice hockey than the type of hockey we're used to seeing at Cwmbran Stadium - started to pay dividends. 2 goals in the final 10 minutes flattered the table-toppers. The result could have been different had Gwent been more clinical in the D, or had they been at full strength. A disappointing result, but there were lots of positives for Gwent to take away from the game. A real battling performance, and a great team effort that highlighted a true team spirit and one-for-all ethos that will surely serve Gwent well come the end of the season.
